She’d sung “The Bear Went Over the Mountain” one too many times, even though she varied each mind-numbing verse. Her bear hopped, it stomped, it doggy-paddled. It jumped over a McDonald’s, the Adirondacks, the schoolyard. It tinkled on every bush. It flew over and through Mrs. Jensen’s oversize panties flapping on the clothesline. Her father’s hands tightened and whitened on the steering wheel until Lucy found herself sitting by the edge of the road, gripping her lunch pail on her lap. When he sighed and circled back to fetch her, she was humming with the bears, lips purpling with berries.
