In those days
when I began creating
my meanings out of symbols
and not matter.
Everything alluded
in conspiracies of purpose.
Grandpa always cut
my buttered toast into right triangles
and laid them down as sunrays
around my runny eggs.
He said, “A good meal
is 80% presentation.”
I assumed that went for people too.
