Late evening, and swimmers are bathing
in sepia waves, braving the breakers

of Mediterranean water, warm
as blood. Cupped in the sea as in the womb, 

levitated by God’s infinity 
pool, they succumb to the undertow’s push 

and pull as the fine white sand underfoot
disappears along with the discordant

croon bleeding from the karaoke bar
somewhere further along the boulevard.
