Sketch of atmosphere. Text states: Onions frying in butter. Garlic in olive oil. Crushed oregano. Aerial effervescence resulting from slicing a very fresh, very cresp green pepper with a very sharp knife. Cucumber. Roasted, carmelized sweet potato. Dill, marjoram, sage, curry. Balsamic vinegar, just a splash. Lemon zest. Thyme. Whole grain mustard, added at the last minute. Now you can open your eyes.

Karen Donovan is the author of Aard-vark to Axolotl, a collection of tiny stories and essays illustrated with engravings from a vintage Webster’s dictionary.
